Every year Mrs. Young travels to art workshops/conferences to learn new art techniques and keep up to date. She applies for grants or pays out of pocket for her summer travels and goes alone to these workshops. This helps push her to see and do things she wouldn’t normally experience. She has learned how important travel is to be a well rounded and knowledgeable individual. The things she experiences and learns on location cannot be matched by reading a book (however she does enjoy reading when she can).

2024:
Summer-Mrs. Young went to an amazing small workshop in Maine where she stayed for a few weeks in a cottage by the shore without electricity. She bonded with the small cohort of college professors and enjoyed the daily hikes, learning creative movement, watching the tides come in and out, eating fresh Maine Lobster, eating all the different blueberry desserts, and the amazing stargazing. Not being a morning person she did not appreciate being woken up at 4 am every morning from the sun shining in her window:)
*Mrs. Young was selected by the US Marine Corps and attended a week long educator workshop in San Diego, CA where she got to experience first hand what the Marine recruits go through.
*She was also selected to go to Walden’s Pond (Henry David Thoureu) Writing Educator workshop in Mass. for a week, but had to cancel last minute

I started teaching art at Douglass in the Fall of 2012. I teach all high school art classes and graphic design (yearbook). I have helped out with many extra activities including : Head Girls Tennis Coach, Wrestling Cheer Sponsor, Softball Coach (Head and Assistant), Class Sponsor, yearbook, and Art Club.
I taught art at Haysville West Middle school before coming to Douglass; Before that I taught art to adults and children of all ages at Derby Rec Center. My first college degree was in studio art and before becoming a teacher I was an active artist doing gallery shows and painting murals/faux finishes in residential and commercial settings.
I am married and have two boys. We live in Mulvane and my oldest goes to Pittsburg State University while the youngest is a senior at Mulvane. We have two pin mins at home (dogs) and a large flower garden.
I am a high school art teacher, coach, artist, mother and a wife. What little free time I have I like to paint, garden, read, watch movies, travel, bake sweets, and sleep (what is sleep?). With my artwork I am inspired by the beauty of nature and the beautiful differences in people. I love to travel and my artwork reflects the different landscapes and feelings I get while on my journeys. I view the greatest of artistic achievements I've seen, such as in Italy, as comparable to the simple natural wonders that I can find here in Kansas. Each one is unique in its own right and it's my job to reflect the emotion and beauty of all. I create a mix of art from finely detailed to complete abstraction. I work in many medias because I feel the subject tells me what it wants for me to use to convey its meaning.I enjoy learning new techniques and working in new media because it enhances my understanding and learning of art. It is not always easy but it makes me so much better in the end.
